Of the 8 million NLRA (National Labor Relations Act) regulated private sector employees represented by unions in 2015, only 6% voted for their representation. The remaining 94% inherited their collective bargaining representative. The National Labor Relations Board can fix this worker injustice administratively, without having to go through congress. Requiring unions to become electorally accountable, supporting secret ballots, and making decertification easier are some of the steps that would ensure employees have representation of their choosing. Kentucky has passed legislation to become the 27th right-to-work state, adding pressure to other states to pass similar laws if they want to remain competitive. Previously, Kentucky had approached right-to-work laws on a county-by-county basis. Right-to-work legislation prevents unions from requiring mandatory participation and forced paycheck contributions as a result. Read more about Kentucky’s House Bill 1 here.
